Britannia was established
in 1995 by fisherman Nick Hutchings and his wife Anita. Nick
is from a long established Beesands fishing family and has been
fishing in and around Start Bay all his working life. His knowledge
and experience have been handed down through the generations
and Nick soon recognised the necessity to provide
a consistent supply of fish/shellfish even through periods of
adverse weather. This is where the idea of building the live
holding tanks evolved from.
Due to our unique location, fresh seawater is easily accessible
and allows safe storage of crab, lobster and scallops, in optimum
condition, keeping it lively and fresh until dispatch.
Nick fishes daily (weather and energy permitting!), on his Gemini
catamaran. The boat is fully equipped for potting, netting,
scalloping and trawling and so whatever the season we should
be able to provide a catch from the bay. During the day he keeps
in regular contact with Anita, who concentrates on the marketing
of his and other local boats' catches. Often the catch is sold
before it reaches dry land!
At our outlet on Beesands seafront we have a traditional counter
where you can purchase the fish of your choice and have it prepared
to your liking. Here you may also view the live shellfish and
learn a little about it's habitat and lifestyle from our knowledgeable
staff. You may even like to "pick your own".
It is through the enthusiasm and demand of our many visitors
that our home delivery service has come about. Now you no longer
have to wait to visit Beesands to enjoy the very best in fresh,
local fish and shellfish, our products can be delivered safely
to your door, carefully wrapped and packed in ice for freshness
by overnight courier.

Britannia also has a fresh seafood stall at the local Farmer's
Markets.
